The Straight has caught up with ‘RocknRolla’ director Guy Ritchie. Ritchie explains the title of the movie, ‘rocknrolla’ and how much he fancies the dark side. Ritchie goes on to share his obsession with gangsters, comic books, and London. ‘RocknRolla’ stars Gerard Butler, Gemma Arterton, Thandie Newton, Jermey Piven and Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges. ‘RocknRolla’ is out in theaters.
“I’m drawn to the dark side because it’s an interesting world for stories,” Ritchie said. “We like bad guys, and…what’s that tiny little movie that just came out that’s done rather well? Dark Knight. Everyone liked the Joker, right? The Joker’s the bad guy. So we’re drawn to the bad guy, and I’m not unique in that respect. The trouble is, I fancy bad guys.”

"...Guy has this thing. The crew knows as soon as he says: ‘Five, four...' At first, I was like: what's going to happen? That's action. You got to say your line. He counts down to the action. That was new to me and interesting. Suddenly you see the whole room focusing, getting into the Guy Ritchie space, which is a good thing. It's great, actually..."

Kebbell also shared what drew him to his role so much to lose over 15 pounds in such a short time. 'RocknRolla' is out in theaters.
"...You very rarely get a script that’s so character filled and such an ensemble piece that you can pick out someone and go, ‘Wow, man, that’s a great one to audition for.’ But Johnny was like that and it’s rare and beautiful. It’s like finding a gem. So it was lovely to read through what Johnny did. After watching the film you think, ‘Shit, I should’ve played one of the others because they’re all brilliant.’ But it was so, so nice..."

Ritchie talks about the details of "RocknRolla" which is an inpiration from the changes London has gone through in the last 20 years, something he describes as the "new New York". Ritchie also talks about having introduced an unusual form of torture in "RocknRolla" which involves
"...Actually I was staying at a friend's house one night there on the river. They threw in a crayfish trap at night and threw a chicken in it. And in the morning, the trap was full of crayfish and the chicken had been stripped of all its meat and I thought that's an interesting way to dispatch a body..."

Having made his debut with "Lock, stock and two smoking barrels" in 1998, Ritchie chats about the big changes in the world of crime over the past 15-20 years. Ritchie also talks about his pub in London, his views on crime and his upcoming film "Sherlock Holmes".
"...It’s going to be very contemporary. Originally, Sherlock Holmes was this intellectual action man and I think what happened was they played down the action man aspect because people just didn't have the means of executing the action in interesting ways. Well, we do have the means and we have the technology so we're just riding on the back of that..."
